Patients enrolled in the trial were randomized to receive either vitamin D3 and fish oil or placebo. Because of this, the researchers wanted to take a more in-depth look into the connection and what could be done. Olivia Okereke, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, told MD/alert that vitamin D had been associated with depression in previous studies, particularly low levels of the biomarker 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The study, published in JAMA, included more than 18,000 patients with an average age of 67 who had no known history of depressive symptoms when the study started. After an average enrollment period of 5 years, the authors said the supplementation did not provide a significant improvement in preventing depression. A recent study conducted over several years looked at whether long-term supplementation with vitamin D3 could help prevent adult patients from developing depression.
